Treating Rosacea DIY

I am not going to cover prescription remedies here…I am not a doctor. Please remember I don’t have or have I ever had rosacea so this is all anectodal stuff I ‘ve gleaned from talking to people and researching…not personal experience.
The general consensus seems to be handle skin with rosacea like sensitive skin…as most skin should probably be handled anyway!

Anyway here goes and hope it helps a bit.
Try to keep things simple.

A Gentle Cleanser such as Oatmeal powder…mix into a paste to use. Store this as powder and mix with water when you want to use.

For moisturising, aloe vera gel, also sheabutter, virgin coconut oil.

Licorice extract  or specifically one of it’s components-  glycyrrhizinic acid is helpful in calming inflammation. This can be drying so use with your aloe vera, or sheabutter, or virgin coconut oil.Because it can be drying you only want to use this when you want to calm a flare up…not longterm.
Salicylic acid is supposed to help as well …some people use the aspirin mask to improve skin texture and reduce redness instead of  medication.

I read on the rosacea forum that some people with seborrheic dermatitis -a condition which can exist alongside rosacea have had favourable results using raw honey and virgin coconut oil. check the rosacea forum

Tumeric as an oral supplement has helped in some cases and is documented in some research.
Online Forum well worth visiting:

Very best of luck and if you get good results, do come share! And don’t forget your sunscreen!!

In the pipelines…

Hi y’all,
I apologise for my sudden disappearance :-)
So what have I been up to… Plenty, but I’ll start with somethings that have come up recently. I often get emails enquiring about various skin conditions, and when I don’t have personal experience, best I can do is research them. One of these is Rosacea…. Also known I gather as the curse if the Celts. Will be doing a post on it once I log in here from my own pc.
Will also be doing a post of “chicken skin” or Keratosis Pilaris which affects all ethnicities.

Natural face masks

Apply all masks to already cleansed skin.

Egg on it’s own makes a great mask…especially good for tightening and is supposed to “improve the appearance of

There is what’s known as the 2stage egg mask…(I think that’s what it was called!)
You use the egg in two stages-seperate the egg white from the yolk
beat the egg white till frothy and then apply to your face and leave to dry,
Once it’s dried, it will feel quite taut, then rinse off, and apply the yolk. Again leave till it’s dry , rinse off.
Pat your face dry…rather than rubbing. Apply a light oil moisturiser.

PS: You can add a few drops of lemon juice to either stage of the above….prefer stage 2
2TBS natural yoghurt
1TBS ground almonds
1TBSspoon
1 TBS honey
2TBS jojoba oil or any other oil
Mix all the ingredients together.
Rub the paste on to your cleansed skin and leave for a few mins-about 10 to 20mins, and then rinse off. Apply moisturiser

last one especially good for oilier skintypes
1 tomato
2TBS yogurt
egg white or/and honey
Beat together and apply to your face, leave on for about 10-20mins and rinse off. Apply moisturiser.

Butter for the skin

Seeing as I was house bound anyway,I decided to play around with some of the ingredients in the press. I needed to make some face and body butters for personal use anyway.

I recently got some seabuckthorn berry oil It is an orange coloured liquid with a sweet scent and is supposed to be good for anti-aging. I particularly like this because it means I get a scent without even adding any essential oils.

Facebutter

Sheabutter
Seabuckthorn oil
Jojoba oil
Raspberry seed oil
rosa mosqueta
carrotseed oil
avocado oil

And for my body butter:

Sheabutter
Cocoabutter
virgin coconut oil
Seabuckthorn oil
Jojoba  oil
Avocado oil
pinch of frangipiani
Vanilla eo

Will post the pictures later …they are on my old phone. In the meantime posting one of our snow people out in the garden in next post.

Skincare care, body care in the winter

It’s  the new year, If you’ve been like me, you have indulged yourself enough over the holiday period, and now, the weather outside is frightful, your heating has been on full blast….

And with whatever else is going on …your skin is probably showing a bit too much evidence of all of the above mentioned. It’s definitely time for some skin-TLC. More  so that you are ready to uncover yourself in the spring or summer when it’s time for the layers of  winter clothing to be peeled.

Starting from top to toe. Here are some posts that cover what you need:

Use an exfoliator for your body

After your shower, do use a moisturiser-simple body oil -make your own if you wish…extra vigin oil/almond oil/ etc+drops of essential oil or get some natural sheabutter from us.

Take off your makeup with your own cleansing oil and /or clean your skin with same

Give yourself a facial

Remember our sheabutter? Use it as lipbalm or as general moisturiser as a body butter.

Protect your skin

Keep wearing sunscreen

Don’t forget your hair:
Shedding hair, try our recipe here.

OR Try our Conditioning hair treatment:

If you want to shop, the following products from us here at NiEriu:
sheabutter, face butter, body oil, facial serum .
Mix a drop or two of the face serum with your  foundation for added moisturising effects. YOu can also use it underneath your sunscreen.

The body oil
can also be used on your hair:  Rub a drop between your hands and run through the ends of your hair.

Sea salt Soap part 2- Cutting the Hardened sea salt soap…

With all the activities yesterday, I didn’t cut the soap when I should have so it ended up way too hard. When I went to cut as per normal using a knife…this is what I got:

It was -as salt soap would be rather crubly. I wasn’t in the mood to rebatch this so I was trying to talk myself into believeing that the rough looking cut soap was okay…afterall it was for me mostly…Then, Mr. NiEriu suggested having a go… and this is what we got:

Yep, they are as smooth as any other soaps…and I am thrilled. He used a saw. Yep…a regular ol saw!

There were a few crumbs-see below which I reckon I could use in scrubs.

I am now off to make sure I don’t burn my coconut rice for tonight…

HAPPY NEW YEAR all!!

May your blessings be many in 2010!

Happy Back Christmas…

…or something along those lines…I am told that is the greeting you offer  in the days following christmas in Denmark…I won’t attempt the Danish version!

Anyway, you get the sentiment. I hope you had a quiet christmas with those you love.

It’s been great spending time with the family after the time we’ve had. We had friends over as well on christmas day so kids were occupied the whole time and it only really came unravelled when it was bedtime. My son was so tired he was in tears and said he was crying from tiredness. Had to hold him to sleep, bless!

On the 26th, I headed out to the NEXTsale with my usual partner Ms. J and didn’t get much though. I needed to pick a few jeans for DS but didn’t happen as there was as usual nothing to suit her.

Tomorrow, having a party to meet up with friends before the new year. We decide that since it was unlikely that we’d get a chance to all meet up, instead of sendin those texts promising to be more sociable, we’d make an effort and actually get together so we hired a venue, got an entertainer and will be hooking up tomorrow, Kids will be occupied and the adults can chill out with a wine or two or juice….that’s the plan anyway.

As I type this I am sitting here smelling of garlic.  I took out my braids on christmas eve, and since I can’t go one more day without combing my hair, I am applying the intensive conditioner as described here. This time, I’ve changed the ingredients though  as I don’t have those used in previous recipe.

Here’s the new one:

*2TBS Milk
*2 TBS Virgin Coconut Oil
*½TBS Garlic powder
*1TBS  Manuka Honey
*5 drops of essential oil mix (eucalyptus, ylangylang, lavender)

After doing a regular wash using a bar, and a rinse with diluted acv, I rubbed in  the mix, combed it through and then put on my shower cap …that was about half an hour ago at this stage.

Lie to me has just come on so I’m probably gonna leave it on for another hour and then wash it off….

Handmade chocolate/truffles

Lovely Handmade chocolate truffles made by Fionnu. I could not help trying out the lemon one….it’s gorgeous. Will beg /pester/blackmail…Fionnu to showing me how to make them and then I might treat them at home. Maybe some of you who read this might help me beg her to give us a recipe?!? If so, post your comments and I’ll use it as ammunition.

Not much else can be said so just look and salivate!

Homade Truffles made by Fionnu Fionnu's handmade truffles

Fionnu's truffles

Milk bath mix.

Got some goatmilk today from Bridget and the Caprine scene. Perfect timing too as my skin has been playing up -excema patches have been doing thier usual thing.
Seems to be responding to oatmeal though.
On the plate here there’s baking soda, powdered goatmilk and oatmeal.  I can’t be bothered trying to get colloidal oatmeal so I make my own by putting my oatmeal through Mr NiEriu’s coffee grinder till it’s really fine.
It would be really cool if I could use it tonight but not gonna happen as I have another bath of guinness soap cooking so instead I’ve mixed it with a little bit of water to make a paste and I’ve smeared it on the patches as a mask …will rinse off later in the shower.

Following along the same theme, made some soap -goatmilk, oats, honey…here’s a picture of some of them.

This batch very lightly scently with ylangylang.

NiEriu Natural Facial for dry skin

ingredients for facial1

ingredients for facial,
originally uploaded by NiÉriu.

In Preparation for a busy weekend, I decided to give myself a facial tonight. I type this with my masque of chocolate…smells yummy!

I ‘ve used all NiEriu products….well mostly…
I recently had a facial done in a popular beauty salon in Dublin City centre- just for a treat and felt like I’d been left short. Despite the fact that I had told the therapist that I had very dry skin, she felt the need to remind me in an almost accusatory tone that I had no blackheads or anything to extract…I did get a nice shoulder rub instead though so was not too unhappy.
Anyway I am back to DIY stylee so sharing with you my procedure for a very Simple NiEriu Facial:

This is suitable for dry and very dry skin

Ingredients:

Cleansing oil

NiEriu Soap

Essential oils of choice(I particularly like Rose and Jasmine at the moment)

Honey

Powdered Oatmeal, rhassoul mud(can stick with just oatmeal)

Dark chocolate (preferably pure or near pure-can be got from lidl)

NiEriu Simply Natural oil
Procedure:
1. Remove all makeup and cleanse the skin using simple cleansing oil mix and babassu facial soap/any other NiEriu soap.
2. Remove all final traces of makeup using cotton wool dampened in any of –rosewater, very diluted acv, chamnomile tea.
3. And then lay a warm face towel over your face. As it cools off, wet and wring it out in a bowl of hot water that contains a few drops of rose and jasmine essential oils.(can use whatever essential oils you prefer)
4. Exfoliate the skin with oatmeal+honey+ milk
5. Apply the mask: mix of dark chocolate(from lidl)+ honey +rhassoul mud (optional) + oatmeal powder+ milk. Leave this on for about 10mins (been more on mine now as I’ve been typing this up!) and then rinse it off.
6. Massage NiEriu simply baby oil-with a few drops of jasmine+rose in upwards motion from neck upwards and outwards from centre of face.
7. All done!!
All takes about 45mins doing it yourself….if you don’t get distracted…off to rinse it off now!

Enjoy!!
ps: I couldn’t get oatmeal powder so, I just put the pinhead oatmeal thru the coffee grinder.
